Founded in the uniquely dense cultural landscape of the Ruhr region in 2007, KunstVereineRuhr is an ever-expanding network of art associations and artists’ residences in the Ruhr cultural metropolis. With joint projects such as GrenzGebietRuhr (2010), BLOWIN‘ FREE (2013) and Canale Grande (2014), local art associations and artists’ residences presented themselves as exposed spaces for contemporary art production and presentation as well as discursive engagement with contemporary art.
Through close contact between producers and observers of art, art associations and artists’ residences offer innovative approaches to contemporary art. Supported by many dedicated volunteers, they traditionally work in the here and now, often with minimal planning. This allows them to be flexible and react to rapidly changing cultural, societal, and economic parameters. As a force within cultural politics, KunstVereineRuhr and its collaborative projects, campaigns, and events deliver a plea for the artistic experiment, the strengthening of civic involvement, and the participation of the many in today’s art scene.
