The end of coal mining

As a geographer and artist, I have been examining coal mining and the steel and iron industry. I am interested in the history and the interplay between these branches of industry as well as their impact on the cultural landscape – and the subsequent impact on sociocultural aspects.

Late 2018 will see the closing down of the last coal mine in the Ruhr Area – and with it the ultimate conclusion of an era of mining in Germany.

In 2012, a massive pit quake forced the Saarland’s coal mining industry into an abrupt and unplanned end.

During an acoustic research trip, I want to look for answers to questions that will also have to be asked in the Ruhr Area.
