what makes it more real than in a sepia image

In my accommodation in Kabelvåg, old sepia photos and drawings are covering the wooden walls. Kabelvåg must have had an eventful past with town assembly and festivities. People wore festive garments and the little market square was decorated nicely. Like the glass protecting the photo paper, there’s a coating between the now and then, and the us and them. I have no idea how these photos can be so important without knowing anything about the captured event; and I will never know how it feels to live here, when everything I get offered here has the look and feel of a travel blog recommendation. If I would open my home to strangers, it would feel protective to design a space they expect in order to prevent them from taking a deeper look into my own whereabouts. The design of a sleeping room can be the coating between two lives.
