narvik – nostalgia

Narvik’s harbor is free of ice all winter long. It is notably warmer than in Kiruna thanks to the Gulf Stream.
The small city is characterized by the sound of incoming ore trains and the industrial structures in the harbor. LKABs docks ruin the view, but without them, Narvik would have never grown.
I can’t locate a city centre here, everything is directed towards the fjord and the sea, where the freight ships are waiting in line to dock at LKAB; the streets, windows and street signs.
I wonder if the people here feel more Wanderlust than in other town structures.
Industrialisation looks slightly displaced here, but makes me feel home, I am more familiar with riveted iron than with an untidy river bench.

The iron ore is being shipped to everywhere in the world from here, but during the occupation of the Nazis most of it was being exported to Germany, and then processed in the steel furnaces of the Ruhrgebiet area.
I feel this uncanny connection to my home area and want to move on as soon as possible.
