a thin layer

Imagine the earth to be as small as a billiard ball. Then breathe onto it. The layer inside of which human life is possible – from the few meters of depth we can dive into the ocean without being asphyxiated by pressure, to the height of the mountains of Himalaya- this layer is only as thin in relation to planet earth, as the steam of your breath is on the billiard ball.

Unlike sea creatures, we need two masses to exist: a ground, and the air around us, so we are constrained by gravity to animate this very thin layer between everything that is underneath our feet, and the atmosphere above. Our senses cannot reach further than this. Developing not only the intelligence to speculate and calculate, but also the machines to enhance these senses, will eventually allow us to populate other habitats. First comes the boundless integration of technology into our physicality, then the abandonment of our origins we left behind, devastated. My generation’s deep belief in technology leads to a neglective attitude towards environmental issues; it will all be in order someday.
Brace yourself for whatever comes after the Anthropocene.
