BIRTHDAY

With the subway I drive towards the city center to watch the famous evening light show, which futuristically stages the imposing skyline. Shenzhen Special Economic Zone celebrates the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up. The show takes place near the city center and the lotus park. I let myself be driven by the crowd in search of a suitable place to see the light projection. After a long walk through the various levels of high quality malls and past international luxurious bars, I end up at a crossroads with a plethora of spectators and police officers who handle the traffic and keep an eye on the congregation. But it is only possible to capture a small section visually, simply because the spatial distance is missing. As a human, I remain a lost point in space, the planned public urban space offers little scope for individual use.
